CANTON, Mo. — 91ֱ will kick off its new Midwest Literary Project on Thursday, June 11, with a community conversation exploring the enduring legacy of Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and the role Hannibal, Missouri, has played in shaping America’s understanding of place, identity, and storytelling.

The first event in the project’s year-long series, Tom Sawyer at 150: Hannibal, Twain, and the American Myth of Place, commemorates the 150th anniversary of Twain’s beloved novel and invites participants to examine how literature influences the way communities see themselves and how others perceive them.

The launch coincides with free admission week (June 8 – 12) offered by the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum (Hannibal, Mo.) as part of its Tom Sawyer 150 Celebration. No registration is required to participate in the Midwest Literary Project activities. Visitors may complete a brief project survey at any point during the week by scanning a QR code available at the museum.

On Thursday, June 11, Dr. Alissa Burger, C-SC associate professor of English and Midwest Literary Project lead, will be on site at the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum to speak with visitors about the Midwest Literary Project and conduct in-person surveys as part of the initiative’s community engagement efforts. Visitors are encouraged to stop by to learn more about the project and its upcoming events.

“Tom Sawyer remains one of the most recognizable literary figures associated with the American Midwest,” said Burger. “This conversation offers an opportunity to reflect not only on Twain’s work, but also on the ways stories shape our understanding of home, community and regional identity.”

As part of the Midwest Literary Project’s three-stage format, participants in each series installment may attend an in-person community conversation, as well as engage with online resources and continue exploring each topic through a companion podcast available on the project’s website.

The Midwest Literary Project is an initiative of 91ֱ’s newly launched Center for Rural Opportunity and is funded by Missouri Humanities. Designed as a year-long series of six themed conversations rooted in the communities of northeast Missouri, the project uses literature and the humanities to examine how place influences identity, storytelling, and the American experience.

Additional topics in the series include Jane Smiley’s “A Thousand Acres,” Midwestern culinary traditions, Black literature and jazz in the Midwest, regional visual arts and folk traditions, and the enduring cultural significance of “The Wizard of Oz.”

More information about the Midwest Literary Project, including online content and podcast episodes, is available at .

91ֱ is sponsoring this program in partnership with the Missouri Humanities and with support from the Missouri Humanities Trust Fund. For more information about the grants program of the Missouri Humanities Council, call (314) 781-9660 or (800) 357-0909 or email clarice@mohumanities.org.

CANTON, Mo. — 91ֱ has named Dr. Ricky Kirby as its new vice president for student experience, effective May 26. Kirby will oversee areas focused on student engagement, student success, and the overall student experience at the College.

Kirby brings a background in higher education leadership, student affairs, housing and residence life, fraternity and sorority life, and organizational development. Most recently, he served as chief experience officer and acting chief executive officer for Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity, where he oversaw organizational growth, education, alumni engagement, conduct and risk prevention, and student-leadership initiatives.

“Ricky’s passion for students, his strategic mindset, and his deep understanding of student development make him an outstanding addition to the Culver-Stockton community,” said Dr. Lauren Schellenberger, C-SC President. “His leadership experience and commitment to helping students succeed both inside and outside the classroom align strongly with our mission and our focus on creating a transformational student experience.”

Kirby said he was drawn to Culver-Stockton because of its student-centered mission and the opportunity to make a direct impact on students’ lives.

“The opportunity to be back on a campus, particularly a smaller institution where I feel like I can truly make a difference in the lives of students, was incredibly appealing,” Kirby said. “I was particularly drawn to the combination of student success and student life departments sitting under one division. Those areas together provide a strong backdrop to support student retention and experience.”

He also pointed to the College’s strategic direction and campus culture as key factors in his decision.

“I was drawn to President Schellenberger’s bold vision and the strategic plan for C-SC, which intensely focuses on the student experience and success,” Kirby said.

Kirby earned his Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration and a Master of Public Administration from University of Georgia and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from University of Memphis.

Throughout his career, Kirby has worked in student engagement, housing and residence life, leadership development, and student support roles at multiple institutions, including Christian Brothers University, Southwestern University, and the University of Georgia.

As he begins the role, Kirby said one of his first priorities will be listening and learning from the campus community.

“My primary focus is to understand what makes C-SC special and important and to identify how I can support the impact of its programs, initiatives, offices, and experiences,” Kirby said. “I want to ensure all our students feel like a critical part of the C-SC community and have the tools, resources, and skills to reach graduation.”

CANTON, Mo. — 91ֱ’s annual Fallen Officer Project once again exceeded expectations this spring, raising just under $2,000, surpassing its $1,500 goal, to support families of fallen first responders and community outreach efforts.

Organized through the College’s Criminal Justice program, the project culminates in a student-led pickleball tournament that brings together campus and community members in remembrance and support. This year’s event, held April 19 at Culver-Stockton, drew 24 participants across 12 teams, with additional support from members of Kappa Alpha Psi, who volunteered as referees throughout the tournament.

Funds raised will benefit the Supporting Heroes Foundation and the Michigan Urban Youth Alliance, organizations that assist families of fallen first responders and foster positive relationships between law enforcement and youth.

“This year’s tournament went really well. We had a great turnout from students,” said Seth McBride, Director of the 91ֱ Center for Public Safety and Chair of the Criminal Justice Department. “We surpassed our goal again this year, and those funds will directly support families who have made the ultimate sacrifice, while also helping build connections between law enforcement and inner-city youth.”

Students in prayer at the 2026 Fallen Officer Project’s pickleball tournament, held April 19 at C-SC.While the fundraiser serves as a compelling hook, the heart of the project lies in its experiential-learning model, connecting students directly with the families and stories behind the fallen.

Students in McBride’s “In the Line of Duty” course are paired with a fallen first responder, conducting research and, in many cases, building personal relationships with surviving family members. The experience provides a deeper understanding of the human impact behind public service.

“These men, women, and K9s are more than first responders; they are individuals with families, friends, and lives beyond the badge,” McBride said. “The least we can do is ensure they are remembered and that their families know their loved ones mattered.”

For junior Zach Kowalewicz (Chicago, Ill.), a criminal justice major, the experience was transformative. “Taking part in the Fallen Officer Project is a challenging but rewarding experience that I’m very grateful for,” Kowalewicz said. “It shaped how I think about my future career and gave me a deeper perspective on the sacrifices first responders make.”

Kowalewicz was paired with the family of fallen firefighter Chevy Gall, Beaufort-Leslie Fire Protection District (Beaufort, Mo.), and developed a meaningful connection through the process.

“Meeting Chevy’s family made everything feel real,” he said. “It drove me to honor their loved one as best as I possibly could.”

He noted that what began as a nerve-wracking experience quickly turned into a lasting relationship. “At first I was nervous because I didn’t know what to expect,” Kowalewicz said. “But after meeting them, it brought a great sense of relief. The connection we built will last.”

The project also reinforces Culver-Stockton’s commitment to experiential learning, giving students opportunities to apply classroom knowledge in meaningful, real-world contexts. Through interviews, research, and personal outreach, students gain insight into the realities of public safety careers while developing empathy, communication skills, and a deeper sense of purpose.

“The tournament is just one piece of it,” McBride said. “What matters most is that students step outside their comfort zones, connect with families, and help ensure these heroes are never forgotten.”

As the program continues to evolve, it has expanded to honor all first responders, including police officers, firefighters, and K9 units, reflecting the broad scope of service and sacrifice within public safety.

For Kowalewicz, the impact is lasting. “This experience has motivated me even more to pursue a career in law enforcement,” he said. “It changed how I see the profession — and who I want to become.”

CANTON, Mo. — The Missouri Humanities Council (MHC) has awarded a grant of $15,000 to 91ֱ in support of the Midwest Literary Project: Culture, Story, and Place. The MHC is the only statewide agency in Missouri devoted exclusively to humanities education for citizens of all ages. It has served as a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities since 1971.

The Midwest Literary Project, developed by Dr. Alissa Burger, associate professor of  English at C-SC, will explore and elevate the stories, voices, and cultural identity of the Midwest. Serving as project lead, Burger will guide a series of humanities-centered programs that engage students, faculty, and community members in examining how literature reflects and shapes the experience of place. Through public discussions, curated content, and community engagement, the project will highlight the depth and complexity of Midwestern narratives while creating space for meaningful dialogue.

“I am excited to work on this project and bring attention to the excellent literary and cultural work being done in our region and to celebrate what makes the Midwest such a special place,” Burger said.

“This work reflects the kind of meaningful, place-based engagement that defines 91ֱ,” said C-SC President Lauren Schellenberger. “By engaging in projects like this, we are strengthening our connection to the region while contributing to a broader understanding of rural culture and identity.”

The project will be part of 91ֱ’s Center for Rural Opportunity, a recently established initiative designed to expand the College’s reach and position it as a leader in rural-focused scholarship and engagement. The Center brings together academic programs, applied research, and community-facing initiatives to generate insight, inform practice, and create models that extend beyond a single geography.

Programming for the Midwest Literary Project will begin later this year, with opportunities for public participation to be announced.

For more information about the project or upcoming events, please contact Burger at aburger@culver.edu.
