Maria Berhorst, lecturer in business, was also inducted into Sigma Beta Delta as an honorary member. Berhorst received her bachelorā€™s degree in nursing from the University of Missouri in Columbia in 2004 and her masterā€™s degree with a focus in nursing administration from Walden University in Minneapolis in 2006.

Sigma Beta Delta was founded in January 1994 and established to honor students who have attained superior records in business programs in schools and colleges with regional accreditation. Membership in Sigma Beta Delta is the highest national recognition a business student can receive at a college or university with a Sigma Beta Delta chapter.

More than 400 chapters have been established in 47 states and internationally. Sigma Beta Delta has more than 80,000 members.

Chapter advisor Tyler Tomlinson, a lecturer in communication, welcomed the inductees. Chapter president Sabrina Kalips, a senior media communication major from Granite City, Ill., inducted the new members.

Fred Berger, senior lecturer of communication, recognized Kalips and Luciani for being named outstanding communication graduates at the Honors Day Convocation on May 12.Ā  Kalips and Luciani also presented abstracts of their senior thesesĀ research.Ā Kalips studied the “Spiral of Silence” theory and female journalists, and Luciani explored the “Uses and Gratifications” theory as it related to live-Tweeting major events.

Baillie was named incoming president of the local chapter for 2020-21.

According to the National Communication Association, Lambda Pi Eta became a part of the NCA in 1988 and the association’s official honor society in July 1995 with more than 500 active chapters nationwide. It is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies.

Lambda Pi Eta represents what Aristotle described inĀ RhetoricĀ as three ingredients of persuasion: logos (Lambda), meaning logic; pathos (Pi), relating to emotion; and ethos (Eta), defined as character credibility and ethics.

Faculty co-sponsors Scott Giltner and Alissa Burger welcomed the new members into the society. Lauren Schellenberger, interim vice president for academic affairs and dean of the College, delivered this yearā€™s charge to the inductees, family and friends.
